Our National Park Service is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. What better time to explore what they have to offer? With 58 parks, it can be hard to choose between them when planning a great family trip. Here is a bucket list of ten to get you started. - Yosemite – One of the most famous and picturesque parks in the system, you can spend a day driving it or a week or more exploring all it has to offer on foot. The parks many waterfalls are among the most popular attractions along with the famous EL Capitan and the parks abundant wildlife. This park is a must see.
- Grand Canyon – Picturesque and awe-inspiring, this park can be as challenging as you want to make it. While most visitors admire it from above, the adventurous can reach the Colorado River below. Whatever your level of adventure, this park can fill the bill.
- Rocky Mountain – This park is an alpine wonderland. Trail Ridge Road, the parks main roadway takes you from one side, up and over the mountains and down the other side. It is awe-inspiring for its abundant wildlife and mountain scenery. There are also over 300 miles of hiking trails including a portion of the Continental Divide Trail.
- Yellowstone – Think Bison and geysers. This park is perhaps the most famous in the park system and for good reason. Mother nature is on full display in all her power and glory in this national treasure.
- Olympia National Park – 95% of this park is designated wilderness which means there is no road. There are plenty of hiking trails for any skill level and the park is home to one of the only remaining temperate rain-forests in the U.S.
- Grand Teton – Just ten miles from Yellow Stone, this park is a shining star in its own right. The wildlife alone are worth the trip even without the gorgeous mountain landscape. Grizzly and black bear, wolves, pronghorn, elk, mule deer, bison, moose, otters, swans and more call this park home.
- Glacier National Park – There are only 25 glaciers remaining of the 150 or so that populated the area in the 1850’s. That number is expected to reach zero sometime around 2030. This park is full of amazing beauty any way you slice it but don’t miss seeing it from the water. There are boat tours and rentals to help get you up close and personal with this park.
- Acadia – Home to Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak on the Atlantic coast, and the oldest park east of the Mississippi river, Acadia hosts some of the best hiking in the east. Don’t miss the 4.4 mile round trip hike to the top of Cadillac Mountain.
- Great Smoky Mountains – The most visited park in the system, Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. Home to one of the most iconic roadways in the states, the Blue Ridge Parkway is breath-taking and can’t be missed.
- Arches – Some of the most iconic landscape photos in the world were taken here. This park boasts an amazing array of natural rock arches, pillars and balanced rocks that show off natures true wonder. Hiking is a favored activity in the park and the sunsets are pure magic, making this an easy addition to this list of camping destinations in the United States.
