Cloudland Canyon, A Georgia State Park

As the weather gets colder, follow the birds and head south! One beautiful camping destination is in the northwest corner of Georgia: Cloudland Canyon State Park. The main feature of the park is Cloudland Canyon, which is a gorge cut into the rock by the flowing waters of Sitton Gulch Creek.

What Does Cloudland Canyon Feature?

Cloudland Canyon State Park boasts of hiking trails with stunning views. Hike the West Rim Trail to drink in the beauty of the canyon. Along this 5 mile trail, there are many overlooks, providing plenty of places to stop and take pictures. Be sure to plan extra time for all the sight-seeing.

The West Rim Trail is mostly flat, but if you are in the mood for a more strenuous hike, try the 1.8 mile Waterfalls Trail. On this hike, you will descend 600 stairs steps to the bottom of the canyon, passing by two waterfalls: Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls. Climb back up for a grand total of over 1,000 steps. The water flow varies from season to season, but the falls are always worth the effort.

Hiking, and Disc Golf… Oh My!

In addition to the hiking trails, there are 30 miles of mountain biking trails and 12 miles of horse back riding trails. Other activities include disc golf, fishing, and geocaching. On most weekends, the park hosts special events, so don’t forget to check the Cloudland Canyon State Park website for a calendar before you go.

To plan your trip, you can make reservations online, though they aren’t required. The state park has 62 campsites with water and electrical hookups, along with several tent and backcountry sites. Keep in mind that the East Rim campground is closed from December to February, but the West Rim campground is open year-round.
